Visiting: Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary
Duration: 5 hours
As you walk out of Çeşme Harbour, please look for your professional local guide who will be holding a name placard, ready to transport you to the incredible historic sights found in Selcuk's surrounding area.
First on the itinerary is the Ancient City of Ephesus, dating back to the 10th century BC and once one of the largest Roman cities of its time. Its ruins have been beautifully preserved, offering an insightful appreciation of the lifestyle of its ancient residents. Your guide will escort you through its main sights, including the large theater that once held up to 25,000 people, as well as the elaborately adorned Celsius Library, completed in 120 AD to house up to 12,000 scrolls.
House of the Virgin Mary
Our second stop is at the House of the Virgin Mary, a short drive from Ephesus. This important pilgrimage site is believed to have been where the Mother Mary lived out her final days and
offers impressive views over Selcuk and the surrounding area.
The Terrace Houses section located within the Ancient Ruins of Ephesus is not included in the tour price (extra entrance fee of 15 USD per person), but a visit here is a highlight for many. Don't miss "The houses of the rich Romans", its oldest building which dates back to the 1st century BC, where beautiful mosaics and frescoes adorn the walls and an ancient clay pipe water and heating system kept its inhabitants cosy. Please be aware that in this section there are over 100 stairs so we do not recommend it for people with physical disabilities. Allow a minimum of 30 minutes to visit.
