Visiting:
Duration: 9 hours
You shall be picked up from the Canakkale cruise ship port. Your Canakkale guide will then drive you to Gallipoli.
The battlefield of Gallipoli lies on Dardanelles on the European side. It is known as Gelibolu in Turkey. The history went that Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England at the time commanded the British army to use its superior naval forces to launch an attack on the Dardanelles. The navy had managed to conquer Istanbul and drive Turkey out of the war before open communication with Russia. The navy was bombarded at the narrowest part of strait, so the British navy turned its forces to the peninsula. The British high command sent wave after wave of Australian, New Zealander and British troops against the highly fortified Turkish position here, which resulting in brutal losses. Ataturk was rising as a war hero from this battle. He was a military commander of genius and a statesman with few equals. Each year thousands of Australian and New Zealanders make pilgrimages to war cemeteries here. This is the place where 22,000 allied dead lie buried.
